DS-85 IS AN ACCURATE AND RECILIENT DOPPLER LOG
Accurate STW measurement over time, is an important input to vessel performance monitoring. With regards to the objective of fuel savings, improved accuracy of STW may contribute to a significant cut in fuel consumption. The challenge for traditional acoustic measurement devices for STW is to provide sufficient resistance to various forms of acoustic noise.
The Furuno Speed Log DS-85 is accurate and resilient. The high frequency (2 MHz) transducer combined with state-of-the-art processing algorithms significantly reduces the impact of different types of noise such as turbulence, foam and air bubbles.
Highly Accurate Measurements
When a vessel moves through the water, acoustic noise is created and is known as a boundary layer. This noise layer can cause errors with acoustic devices. By measuring speed through water (STW) farther away from the keel, the DS-85 penetrates through this noise and boundary layer resulting in a more stable and accurate speed measurement compared to an electromagnetic speed log.
EASY RETROFIT FROM FURUNO SPEED LOG DS-80
In case of retrofit of the Furuno DS-80 to DS-85 the transducer can be reused. This allows for a more flexible retrofit. Also, the DS-85 transducer fits nicely into the DS-80 gate valve, which means there is no need for dry-docking in order to install the new transducer. It also fits into the DS-80 tank. However, replacement will need to be done in dry-dock.
PRICE COMPETITIVE RETROFIT OF 3-AXIS SPEED LOGS
In case of retrofit from a 3-axis speed log such as Furuno DS-50 (discontinued) or DS-60, we would recommend combining Furuno Speed Log DS-85 and Furuno Satellite Log GS-100, as this will be a price competitive solution.
GS-100 is type approved in accordance with the IMO definition of a Speed and Distance Measurement Equipment (SDME) and may therefore be installed as a speed log. However, ships over 50.000 GT, built on or after July 2014, is required to carry two separate devices, one for speed through water (STW) and an additional 2-axis speed log for speed over ground (SOG). Vessels may also be required to satisfy high-class notations or customer requirement to output alarms over serial interface, in case of STW threshold violations.
The combination of DS-85 and GS-100 satisfies these requirements.
